A Lighthouse Rug

A Lighthouse Rug

I took a little trip to the coast of Maine recently, to visit a dear friend for the weekend, and we toured the Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse in Portland. And what did I find in the lighthouse keeper’s room but a braided rug! I should have asked about it- where it may have come from, or who made it, but I tend to just listen to tour guides rather than pry more information from them.

According to the website, the furnishings in the rooms are representative of a turn-of-the-century lighthouse, but there are no old pictures of the inside, so a braided rug may or may not have actually been there in the early 1900’s. But I like to think one was there, to warm the feet of the keeper when he had to get up and tend the light on cold winter nights.

It’s always fun to find braided rugs in historic places.
