Braiding or Plaiting?

Did you know there’s a difference? At least in my world, there is! One is not necessarily better than the other, they just work the fabric differently.

Do you see how there is not a straight line between the dark blue rows and the 3-color row, but the loops kind of interlock as they alternate with each other? Almost like hexagonal pavers in a patio. That is because of how the lacing is done when braiding. Plaiting is laced differently, which results in a straight edge between rows. (And for those of you wondering why the edge between the dark blue and the white row IS straight, it’s because it’s going in the opposite direction and was e-laced together.)

While I hope to try plaiting someday, at this time I’m strictly a braider. So my video tutorials are made for braiders, and would probably not work for plaiters. If you’re not sure which one you are, or want to switch, please take a look at this video:
